More than 4,000 junior school pupils in Torfaen will get free school dinners from the new term in September.
It’s part of the Welsh Government’s Universal Free School Meals offer which requires primary schools across Wales to provide a free meal to all primary school children by September 2024.
Children in reception, years one and two started to get free school meals from September 2022.
Families that have traditionally qualified for means-tested free school meals can still access extra support, such as the school essentials grant, but must apply to the council.
Councillor Richard Clark, executive member for children, families and education, said: “Extensive research confirms that a nutritious meal significantly enhances a child’s aptitude for learning. While breakfast clubs have already made a positive impact, this new scheme heralds a transformative leap forward.
“For families who may not have previously qualified for means-tested free school meals and have faced challenges posed by rising food prices, this initiative offers solace by ensuring their children receive a nourishing lunch, equipping them to actively engage in lessons.”
