A Cwmbran couple and their dog had seconds to escape from their car before it was engulfed in flames. Another driver spotted flames coming from under the Mercedes and stopped his car to flag them down.
Rhiannon and Marcus Bennett were heading to the canal to take their dog for a walk yesterday (2 April 22) afternoon.
Rhiannon told Cwmbran Life: “The incident happened on Five Locks Road, Pontnewydd. Marcus, my partner was driving. I was in the passenger seat and we had our dog, Leo, on the back seats.
“The car in front slowed down and stopped. The driver got out of the car and started waving at us. Marcus stopped the car and got out. That’s when he noticed fire coming from under the driver’s seat area. He yelled at me to get out of the car. The other driver had called the fire service.
“I got the dog and just got far away from the car then stopped other cars coming down the road. It happened very quickly. The car was consumed with flames in seconds.”
When at a safe distance Rhiannon took a video and you can hear explosions as black smoke billows into the air. Firefighters arrived and put out the fire.
She said: “I would like to thank the man who flagged us down. We were in shock so didn’t get his details. We had moments to get out of the car before it was engulfed. It was a pretty unbelievable afternoon. We don’t have much information yet about why it happened.
“The fire service arrived swiftly. I was very happy with them, considering it all happened so quick.”
