Scaffolding on House of Fraser in Cwmbran

The owners of Cwmbran Centre have confirmed that House of Fraser will end its lease in June and close its doors to shoppers.

David Evans, the department store, opened in Gwent Square in 1964 before the firm was sold to House of Fraser.

Closing down sale signs have appeared in the windows and on the scaffolding that has covered the building since July 2020.

A spokesman for LCP, the national commercial property and investment company that owns and manages Cwmbran Centre, confirmed to Cwmbran Life that House of Fraser has served notice to terminate its lease on Thursday 23 June.

“While we are naturally disappointed that House of Fraser, which is a longstanding retailer here, has decided to vacate its store, we will use its departure as an opportunity to kickstart our plans to revitalise and develop Gwent Square.

“Since taking ownership earlier this year, we’ve been looking at how we can update this part of the centre and we look forward to revealing those plans over the next few months. Cwmbran Centre is a thriving and busy centre that serves a large community and we are committed to investing in it and improving the offer there.”

Leading brands in Cwmbran include Asda, Primark, JD Sports, River Island, Superdrug, New Look and Deichmann. The town centre has 3,000 free car parking spaces and a bus station.
