A Plaid Cymru MS has called on unpaid carers to take advantage of a £500 payment before the scheme closes in September.

Peredur Owen Griffiths, who represents the South Wales East region, said the scheme is rare recognition of the “immense work” unpaid carers carry out and should be taken full advantage of before the closing date.

The registration period for the £500 payment opened on August 15 and will close at 5pm on September 2. Unpaid carers who were receiving Carer’s Allowance on March 31 2022 can apply to their local authority for the money.

Peredur said: “Throughout Wales there are believed to 370,000 carers who support loved ones through unpaid care.

“Their selfless and compassionate care holds families together and allows their friends or family to maintain independence. In doing this, our unpaid carers are making an immeasurable contribution to our communities.

“They are also saving the economy billions of pounds.”

Peredur added: “I hope that all eligible carers take advantage of this one-off payment of £500 and apply before the closing date of September 2nd.

“The money is the very least that is owed for the immense work and care they provide, all year round.”
