Part of Cwmbran Community Council’s building in Old Cwmbran may be used as a ‘warm space’ for residents to visit during winter.
Warm spaces are popping up across the country as rising energy prices leave many people worried about paying the bill to heat their home. Businesses and organisations that are already open and heated are telling the community that they are welcome to pop in for a rest, chat and maybe a warm drink.
They also help combat loneliness and isolation.
At last week’s community council meeting Cllr Chris Morgan, Lowlands & Avondale Ward, said venues in his area were advertising themselves as open for people to pop in to socialise and save on energy.
Cllr Susan Morgan, Lowlands & Avondale Ward, has shared a list of venues offering themselves as warm spaces in Pontnewydd where people can visit.
Councillors suggested that the ‘annexe’ of their office could be used as a warm space. Councillor Kebba Manneh, St Dials Ward, put forward a motion that they first take advice from One Voice Wales, the membership and advice organisation for community councillors in Wales.
Four voted for the motion, six voted against and two abstained, so the motion was defeated.
Thermal blankets
The community council has ordered 1,000 thermal blankets to give to vulnerable residents. Since their council’s last meeting, they have talked to Cwmbran Centre for Young People and Age Connect to look at creating a partnership for distributing the blankets to those who need them. The two organisations are running warm spaces so a partnership ‘would work extremely well’, councillors were told. The council is also talking to other organisations to help give out the blankets.
