Cwmbran Community Council is unhappy concerns it raised over potential traffic problems while a new footbridge is being installed at the town’s train station have been ignored.

In September, plans were approved for a new footbridge and lift to make the station easier to use for passengers. At the community council’s October meeting of its environment, sustainability and planning committee, Cllr Anthony Bird, Northville Ward said he was not happy with the way permission had been granted.  He said they asked for construction traffic to be “restricted to the Station Road end of Somerset Road to avoid back ups by Edlogan Way.” 

But the application was approved without any such conditions on the developer. The decision report said: “The developer should note that Cwmbran Community Council has concerns over site access and would like to see all construction access to the site be restricted to the Station Road end of Somerset Road.” The community council said that additional traffic from Edlogan Way/ St David’s Road would “cause major issues in what is already a nightmare area”.

Councillors agreed they should write to the county council to “register our displeasure” after the application was approved these conditions.
