A Cwmbran schoolboy has returned to the UK after competing in the US Kids World Teen golf championships.
James Palfrey, 13, a pupil at Croesyceiliog School, flew to North Carolina with his family on 23 July. He played in the tournament at the famous Pinehurst course that has hosted the US Open and the Ryder Cup.
Martyn, his dad, said that his son enjoyed three days on the courses to acclimatise to the heat before day four, and the official practice round.
On days five, six and seven, James shot 78 every day, plus six for all three rounds. Martyn said: “James played some outstanding golf in very hot and tricky conditions. At times he was not rewarded for some great shots. His long game, irons and chipping were excellent but on a couple of occasions, he struggled with the pace of the lightning-quick greens.
“As always despite trying his absolute best James believed he could have scored lower, but considering his lack of experience playing in the USA he was very pleased with his overall performance and feels very lucky to have experienced Pinehurst.
“He finished tied 86th in a field of 150 for his age category. Taking away the many players tied, he shot the 22nd-best total score for his three rounds. Having experienced this, it has made James even more determined to improve his game and try and qualify again in the future.
