The Summer reading challenge – ‘Ready, Set, Read!’ has started in Torfaen libraries.

Children aged 4-11 can visit any Torfaen library and sign up for the challenge. They will be invited to read six or more library books of their choice throughout the summer. As they read each book they will collect rewards on the way.

Any books, including audio books and eBooks, that are borrowed from any Torfaen library counts towards the challenge.

Don’t worry if you are not a member of the library – you can register for a card at any time.

Councillor Richard Clark, Torfaen Council executive member for children, families and education, said: “Children taking part in the challenge not only have fun but also return to school in September as more fluent, confident, and happy readers. By maintaining their reading habits over the long summer break, they ensure their literacy skills continue to flourish.”

The libaries in Cwmbran, Pontypool and Blaenavon are running free story and craft sessions for 5 – 10 year olds throughout August.

The Summer Reading Challenge is backed by The Reading Agency – a charity promoting the benefits of reading among children and adults in the UK – and is delivered in partnership with libraries and the Youth Sport Trust.
