A CHURCH in Cwmbran has marked its 120th anniversary.

Parishioners of St Mary’s Church, which is in Croesyceiliog, celebrated the milestone last week by decorating the inside with floral offerings as well as displaying decorations of each patron saint.

Celebrating the occasion, the Reverend Karin Pardoe said: “It is a fantastic achievement for us as a small church and I want to thank everyone who has helped make this such a special week.

“I believe the reason for our success is that we have a huge heart and play a big role in the community.

“For 120 years St Mary’s Church has stood strong and has always played its part – whether that’s through helping foodbanks or collecting items for charities – and that will never change.”

She added: “We want to bring more of the community in, so please do get in touch.

A rectangular church built in the early years of the 20th Century, the Mitchell family of Llanfrechfa Grange were instrumental in its founding.

The church, built entirely of red brick, was intended as a mission church to relieve All Saints Church, Llanfrechfa and was licensed as a Place of Worship by the Bishop of Llandaff, the Right Reverend Richard Lewis, on 28 January 1903.

St Mary’s Church holds two services weekly—every Tuesday (10am to 11am) and Sunday (9.30am to 10.45am).
