Cwmbran Community Council met last night. A few others items will be stories on their own so watch this space. This is just a quick round-up of some other updates.
- Cllr Bill Walker (Llantarnam Ward) said he and Cllr Mike Villars had been to a productive meeting with their local PCSO. Cllr Peter Jones (Two Locks Ward) said he and Cllr Luke Simmonds had done the same in their ward and it went well.
- Cwmbran Big Event. Gareth Davies, council clerk, said all the plans were going well and there would be a site meeting next week.
- Councillors approved a £7,000 grant for the Friends of Pontnewydd Park group. They also discussed other parks in the area and said a ‘Friends of Parks’ group could be set up where volunteers could share their expertise to help each other.
- Councillors were given an update from Citizens Advice about the £10,000 grant they were awarded in November. Cllr Anthony Bird, (Northville Ward) council chair, said that £2,124 had been spent out of the £10,000. He said that it’s “not exactly great” that people weren’t getting the help they needed during the cost of living crisis. Cllr Stuart Ashley (Mount Pleasant Ward) said if grants weren’t used by an organisation the clerk should follow up and investigate. Cllr Kebba Manneh (St Dials Ward) seconded Cllr Ashley’s comments. Councillor Leanne Lloyd-Tolman (Upper Cwmbran Thornhill) said: “I’d just like to say how disappointed I am with Citizens Advice’s response to our funding. To hear they’ve only spent just over a fifth in a huge cost of living crisis when there are so many needy out there is disappointing to say the least.” Gareth Davies, council clerk, said a representative of Citizens Advice was unable to attend the meeting but he had passed on the community council’s “concerns that the money wasn’t been spent as quickly as anticipated.” A report from Citizens Advice showed that 17 households in crisis had been helped through emergency fuel vouchers. The £2,124 had bought ten credit meter vouchers and 20 prepayment vouchers.
- Caroline Genever-Jones, elections and business manager at Torfaen Council, gave the same presentation that she gave to Henllys Community Council earlier this month about a boundary review.
- Councillors asked to be given updates at their next meeting on plans for a plaque to commemorate Queen Elizabeth II and a road safety education programme for children.
Councillors also had presentations about the impact of the work of Torfaen Play Service and the county borough council’s consultation on changes to waste and recycling services. Visit Cwmbran Life over the next few days for those reports.
