The ownership of a park in Henllys is still unclear around three months after it was ‘withdrawn’ from being auctioned following intervention by Henllys Community Council and Torfaen Council.
Community councillors alerted the county council when residents were surprised to see ‘For Auction’ signs appear on the land advertising a sale day in September. The 0.8 acres of land between Tegfan Court and Henllys Way was listed on behalf of a liquidator with a guide price of £45,000.
A county council consultation took place in 2021 after residents raised concerns over its suitability as a park due to it being hidden from public view. There were also reports of anti-social behaviour.
Community Councillor Valerie Waters paid for a land registry search and found the land is owned by David Mclean Homes Limited. A search on Companies House shows this company’s status is ‘liquidation’.
A community council meeting in September heard that the documents showed the land should have been transferred and ‘adopted’ by Torfaen Council ‘within 18 months’ of 29 October 1991. This would have been around the time that the houses surrounding the park were built.
A Torfaen Council spokesperson told Cwmbran Life this week: “The land in question was not sold, as it was withdrawn from the auction following our involvement.
“The Council have tried to engage with the agent acting for the seller on several occasions since it was withdrawn from the market, and have been promised call backs, but to date the Council have still been unable to speak to them.”
