Two primary schools in Cwmbran have become the first in Torfaen to launch new active travel school plans

Blenheim Road Community and Coed Eva Primary Schools unveiled their plans this month, as part of International Walk to School month.

The plans include a commitment to increasing the number of children and staff who regularly walk, scoot or cycle to school, through lessons and school assemblies about the benefits of active travel, as well as events to celebrate Walk to School Week.

Stacey Knight, head of learning at the Federation of Blenheim Road and Coed Eva Primary Schools, said: “As a school we are committed to promoting active travel.

“Our year 4 children in the summer term enjoyed being a part of the programme and making a difference to our school and local community.”

The schools have been supported by Torfaen Council’s active travel team, which is also working with other schools to develop active travel school plans.

Councillor Mandy Owen, executive member for the environment, said: “Making changes to the way you travel can have a positive impact on the environment and your health.

“Having fewer cars parking close to schools will also improve safety for pupils and younger siblings.

“We look forward to finding out what difference the plans make to active travel rates in the schools, and to working with other schools to develop their active travel plans.”
