Gwent Hockey Club is holding its annual open day in September for new players of all ages to try out the sport.

The day is also a chance for former players to return to the club who train and play its home games at Cwmbran Stadium.

Jacob Draper, the Team GB player, who represented his country and both the Paris and Tokyo Olympics started his career with Gwent Hockey Club.

In an interview with Cwmbran Life, Jo Draper, his mum said: He started playing alongside football. Hockey was a relaxing thing he did. Soon enough hockey took over.”

She said the “culture” at Gwent Hockey Club means the “older experienced players bring on the younger ones who have the legs” and this means it’s a supportive sport for all ages.

The open day is on Saturday 7 September with sessions for juniors (up to under 16s) and seniors (new and all players.). There is no need to book.

  • Under 6s to under 10s can take part from 10am to 11.30am,
  • Under 12s to under 16s can take part form 11.30am to 1pm.
  • The session for new seniors is from 1pm to 2pm.
  • The session for all senior players is from 2pm to 4pm.
