Lane Lippiatt talks about how she found her spark

Sixty-seven mums took part in an event in Cwmbran to help them find their ‘spark’.

‘Mumentum’ was launched earlier this by Bron Afon’s Helping Working Families project to bring together mums to support each other.

It’s not just aimed at new mums. The team behind the project discovered that mums of all ages were experiencing ‘isolation and loneliness‘.

Suzy Sorby, the project officer with Bron Afon, said: “We launched [Mumentum] in March, on International Women’s Day and it became apparent that it wasn’t just a one-hit wonder thing. Mums really needed somewhere to have a safe space where mums can support mums to come together to celebrate as well as talk about some of the subject issues that matter to mums.”

She said it led to several mums volunteering to become ‘mumentors’ and continue to organise events and keep the group going.

One of the ‘mumentors’ is Lane Lippiatt. The 49-year-old has two sons aged 25 and 16.

She said: “We’ve been planning all the events, Getting to know people, doing the mum hang-outs, just generally helping each other to have more confidence and helping other mums and making friends. So yes, and feeling better about myself.”

At the recent event on Wednesday 11 September 2024 at Mount Plesant Hall she stood up to tell the mums how she found her spark by being a part of ‘Mumentum’.

Lane said: “It was a basically about how I, being an older mum I sort of lost myself.

“Parenting is a completely different kettle of fish when you’ve got adult children. Just taking a chance and coming to the event has really changed things for me and made me feel a lot better about myself and life in general.”

She told the audience that when they find the spark in their life it will “start a fire that will warm your whole self”.

Suzy added: “Through our consultation, it came out that a lot of mums felt like they didn’t have a spark. They really felt they didn’t have anything about them other than just being a mum. Tonight’s event is all about mums finding their spark.

“We’ve got lots of organisations around the room that can help people find their spark journey at whatever journey they’re on. So whether that’s about finding self-love to start with, whether that’s about looking at fitness, or improving through training or getting advice about how to set up your business.

“It’s all about helping mums to find that spark and to help them go away from this evening with a little bit of confidence, a little bit more knowledge to be able to succeed.”
