A Cwmbran drama group will perform the Easter story today and end with the dramatic moment Jesus is raised on the cross.
The Passion Play will start at 10.45am in Monmouth Square in the town centre, near Iceland.
A 2.5m x 2m cross has been built and will be carried up towards Monmouth Walk, next to One Beyond, where the actor playing Jesus will be ‘nailed’ to it and raised up.
Activate, a group based at Victory Church, has prepared for the Good Friday performance. Cat Cullen, from the group, told Cwmbran Life: “You don’t realise how powerful it is until you see it come to life.”
‘Grown men in tears’
She said other Passion Plays she’s been involved in have seen “grown men in tears.”
A cast of eight is involved, including Roman soldiers and two Marys. Music will play throughout the Passion Play. Cat warned there will be “screaming and yelling” as Jesus walks with the group and the cross.
The Salvation Army and Churches Together will then hold a service and invite shoppers in town to take part.
