Kristian Wharton scored one of Cwmbran Town AFC’s goals against Monmouth Town on Saturday 26 April 2025.
It saw his side complete a perfect 30-match unbeaten run in the Gwent Premier League. Standing in the crowd were proud mum and dad, Joanna and Sean Wharton.
Sean was part of Cwmbran Town FC’s history-making squad that won the inaugural League of Wales in the 1992/1993 season and earned entry to the UEFA Champions League, going out on away goals to Cork City after a 4-4 aggregate score.
I spoke to him after the match.
He said: “It’s fantastic for the town, it’s good for the club, good for the manager Dale.
“Everything they did, they did right this year, and they deserve it. They’ve been knocking on the door for a couple of years but they finally got there. As the father of a son that’s playing for the team and being promoted with the club, I think it’s great. It’s a wonderful feeling.”
I jokingly asked Sean if he “taught Kristian all he knows” about football?
He said: “He taught me. He’s a much better footballer than me. All of my children were much better and Kristian is no different. He’s brilliant. He’s a good footballer.
“I’m very proud of him. A few weeks ago, we talked about scoring and all of a sudden he starts scoring. He gets himself in the right positions. The keeper made some great saves today but he got the goal he deserved.”
Kristian is the deputy headteacher of Cwmffrwdoer Primary School in Pontypool.
The other Crows’ goal in the 2-2 match was scored by Alex Davies in the second minute.
