A health and well-being walking group has celebrated its 20th anniversary with a VE Day themed stroll.

This week, 70 members of the Torfaen Take a Stroll group walked from the Foxhunters car park to the Blorenge trig point, in Blaenavon – reenacting their very first walk in 2005.

Following the walk, the group – some of whom were dressed in 1940s-style clothing and Union Jack flags – visited the Rifleman’s Arms, in Blaenavon, where they were treated to tea, coffee and a buffet.

The group is run by the council’s sports, health and fitness team who organises seven free walks every week made up of health walks, between one and two miles, and progressive walks, between three and five miles.

Co-ordinator Lynne Mattravers said: “It was great to see so many people join the walk this week to celebrate our 20-year milestone. Over the past 20 years, we’ve had more than 2,000 members and clocked up around 50,000 miles – that’s the equivalent of walking twice around the earth!

“Many people have built up friendships by attending these walks and have gone away on holidays together along with building other interests like, lunches, exercise classes and evenings out.”

Lesa Davies, 67, was among those who attended the anniversary walk on Tuesday. She said: “I was diagnosed with a spinal condition and told I may be confined to a wheelchair. I went along to the walking group when to see if I would be able to join and was accepted with open arms.

“Walking at least three times a week with newly found friends has really helped me stay active and has aided my condition.”

Suzanne Walters, daughter of 84-year-old Janine Jones, who regularly walks with the group, said: “Mam joined Lynne’s walking group over 11 years ago, following the death of my father.

“Mam is partially sighted and wouldn’t be able go on these walks without being with the group and having their assistance on occasions.

“Over the years, she has had two knee replacements, but remaining active and being part of this group has helped her make a full and swift recovery and she loves the company and the exercise”.

Clive Sussex, 71 added: “Each step we’ve taken, from the mist-covered peaks to the deep green valleys, has been a journey that has nourished not only my soul but my body as well.”
