A former Cwmbran High School pupil has been shortlisted in the Cardiff Business Awards.

The annual event is the “Leading Business Awards Celebrating Excellence in Cardiff.”

Finlay Aston, 18 from Ty Canol, has been shortlisted for the Young Business Person of the Year. An email landed in his inbox last Thursday. During our chat on the weekend, he told me he was “still trying to process” the news.

He left school at 16 and started a carpentry apprenticeship, but switched careers and moved into sales.

Finlay joined Complete Business Solutions in Cardiff in 2024. It supplies businesses from across the country with “anything they need” from stationery to uniforms to furniture.

During our chat, he said he liked doing business studies with Claire Ager, a teacher at Cwmbran High School, adding: “I always enjoyed her lessons.”

His family is “proud” of the news, especially his dad, who has enjoyed a long career in sales.

Finlay has to give a presentation to a judging panel in October.

The winners will be announced in a ceremony in the city’s Holland House Hotel on Friday 14 November.
