A Cwmbran teenager has signed a 12 month contract with Championship winning side Cardiff City. David Richards, aged 19, was a pupil at Croesyceiliog School.
The goalkeeper has been with the Cardiff City Academy since he was nine-years-old. The 6ft 3inch shot-stopper had already attracted interest from other Premier League clubs. But last Monday, the day before Cardiff City drew 0-0 with Charlton to guarantee promotion to the top flight, David met with club manager Malky Mackay and signed on the dotted line.
David said: “I was delighted with the offer and would like to thank the many coaches who I’ve the privilege of working with over the years. These include George Wood (ex Scotland and Arsenal goalkeeper), Martyn Margetson (ex Cardiff City and Wales goalkeeping coach) and the current goalkeeping coaches at Cardiff City, Lee Kendall and Jim Hollman.”
In his younger days David was playing at a good level with Croesyceiliog Cricket Club but football has always been his dream.
While playing for Cardiff City at Academy level he has lined up against several Premier League clubs and is on stand-by for Wales U21.
