REVIEW- Sunday lunch at Llandegfedd Lake. I scanned the menu at the cafe overlooking the 434-acre reservoir, wondering if it would ever include “locally caught trout” among the options.
It’s the sort of thing that would be pretty normal in a Mediterranean fishing village.
As we took our seats, I spotted two anglers, dressed head to toe in camouflage clothing, walking down the jetty and stepping into a boat. My mind goes off in all sorts of weird and wonderful places.
This gorgeous spot on the Torfaen and Monmouthshire border is a day-dreamer’s dream.
Whether eating or drinking, snacking or having a full meal, it’s a relaxing place. An empty table in the corner was set up for an afternoon tea party for 11 people.
The group of women walked in as we were leaving. It was a 40th birthday party. They had lots of balloons ready to decorate the table.
Lake view
I liked this about the place. Everyone was there for a different reason- but all with the same benefit of the view of the lake.
Today’s visit was thanks to a kind email that landed in my inbox a month ago from the team at the lake. They asked if I fancied trying out their Sunday lunch on the house.

We went for “Roast Chicken Breast (GF) Chicken breast in a light rosemary & garlic rub with a sprinkle of sea salt crystals” and “Celtic Pride Roast Beef (GF) Celtic Beef soaked in bouquet garni bath, slowly roasted to tenderness”.
That’s beef and chicken to me and you- but the menu wording always helps 🙂
It was served with a generous bowl of greens, and sides of Yorkshire pudding, stuffing, roast potatoes, roasted carrots, red cabbage and beetroot. Tidy.

Great customer service with nice chit chat and a buzz across the cafe, and top food- what’s not to like?
I went for an ice-cold can of mango-flavoured Tango Try saying that after a few drinks. This could be my soft drink of choice for the summer.
I spotted a couple of old schoolfriends- who are now married and have children together- enjoying coffees on the balcony, and chatted to them before leaving and picking up an important future Cwmbran Life story about men’s health- and how vital it is for blokes who feel unwell to not ignore the signs.
I left with a full belly and a possible Cwmbran Life story- my perfect combination for a day out.
Parking is free for an hour or £3 for all day.
