A Pontypool walking rugby team is encouraging more local people to give the sport a try, with weekly sessions open to all ages, genders and abilities.
Pontypool Wizards, based at The Memorial Ground, Conway Road, train every Thursday from 7pm–8pm.
The group describes itself as welcoming, social and supportive – with many players staying for a pint and a chat after training.
Formed in 2025, the Wizards have grown steadily and now have members ranging from their early 20s to their 70s. Some have played rugby before, while others had never picked up a ball until joining.
Walking rugby is a non‑contact, slower‑paced version of the sport designed to help people stay active, meet new friends and boost their wellbeing. Tackles are made with a two‑handed touch, running is not allowed, and the emphasis is on fun and teamwork.
Players say the benefits go far beyond fitness. One member said joining the Wizards had “done wonders” for their mental health.
The team is supported by several local sponsors and works closely with mental health charity Tidy Butt, as well as taking part in community projects and fundraising events.
Anyone interested in joining can simply turn up on a Thursday evening or contact the team via [email protected] or through their Facebook page.
