FedFest – the annual fun day held by The Federation of Blenheim Road Primary School and Coed Eva Primary School – drew a large crowd on Friday 5 June as families packed into the grounds of Coed Eva Primary School.
The site was filled with stalls, games and attractions for visitors to explore, while an outdoor stage showcased performances from singers Daisy and Ruby, the schools’ dancers and the choir.
PTA chair Michelle Robins said the build‑up had created a real buzz across both schools. “It’s really brought our school community together,” she said. “We’ve got real focus around encouraging our local community in more this year. The build‑up has been amazing and the kids have been building it up over the last few days. We’ve got bracelets being given out to all the children so they’re really keen to get involved.”
One of the most popular attractions of the day involved pupils lining up to throw wet sponges at their headteacher – and he didn’t escape the gunge either.
Paul Keane
Paul Keane spent around 40 minutes locked in the stocks as pupils from both schools took aim. Minutes after being released, he was announced as the person chosen to be slimed, and soon found himself sitting in a paddling pool as staff, parents and pupils cheered while two large bowls of gunge were poured over him.
“Anything for the kids and the PTA. It’s all good fun,” he said. “I never got to do this when I was in school so it’s quite good that you get to see your headteacher in the stocks.”
Paul joked that some of the sponge‑throwing talent on display could have a bright future.
“We’ve seen a natural generation of sportspeople coming through here, some future Wales cricketers.”
He also praised the huge team effort behind the event. “We couldn’t do anything without them. Michelle [Robbins, chair of PTA] , and the work of the whole PTA that’s gone in over weeks and months of planning over this. It’s been amazing.
“It’s just lovely to bring the whole community together – the police, the coastguard, the voluntary alliance, all these different kinds of agencies, just wonderful. It’s what a school is for, about being an open place for everyone to be and to feel welcome and celebrate Cwmbran and our part of it.”
