Pupils at Ponthir Church in Wales Primary School have been praised by inspectors for their “exemplary behaviour” and their enthusiasm for taking an active role in school life.
In a report published on 11 May 2026, Estyn said the school has an “inclusive and caring ethos” built on “strong, respectful relationships” with staff.
Inspectors noted this helps pupils engage confidently with staff, classmates and learning.
One of the standout strengths was the school’s pupil leadership groups, which Estyn described as a key feature that allows children to shape decisions and lead purposeful activities.
Headteacher Aisling O’Mahony said she was “absolutely thrilled” with the report, calling it a reflection of the dedication shown across the whole school community.
She added that the success is a testament to “fantastic pupils, talented staff, supportive governors and families” who work together to create a nurturing environment. She said the school is “incredibly proud” and looks forward to building on its strengths.
Inspectors also praised the school’s broad and balanced curriculum, enriched by engaging experiences such as outdoor learning. They found that most pupils make good progress in literacy, numeracy and digital skills. Their single recommendation was for staff to draw up an action plan to improve pupils’ Welsh-speaking skills.
Cllr Richard Clark, executive member for children, families and education, congratulated everyone involved, saying reports like this show why regular attendance matters because the achievement “could not have been achieved without each and every member of the school.”
