Six pupils at Coed Eva Primary School are helping to make the school a better place by challenging teachers and suggesting ways it can improve. Most schools have a School Council who organise events and share the views of pupils with staff.
But this Cwmbran school has also formed a Pupil Leadership Team who have special responsibilities and extra involvement in decision-making. Since being set up earlier this year they have been involved in interviewing potential new teachers and led a project to improve the displays around the school.
They felt that some subjects weren’t getting as much attention as others and the quality of displays were very different. The new display policy will ensure they are always up-to-date and help to celebrate success across the curriculum.
Handwriting standards
In recent weeks they have been examining handwriting in every year group as they feel this is an important skill that is crucial for their classmates’ education. They will tell teachers their ideas to improve handwriting standards in every class. The PLT often spend their lunchtimes doing surveys on the playground on important topics to then feedback the results to staff.
They met candidates for some jobs at the school and were able to ask them some questions during a special session on the interview day.
The Pupil Leadership Team is made up for three year five and three year six pupils. Next year this will increase to four per year which shows the importance the teachers place on the group.
