Aged over 60? You can take part in a FREE ‘healthy cooking on a budget course’ in Cwmbran.
Sara Butler from The Fed Line Project Newport and Cwmbran, is running the sessions.
She told Cwmbran Life: “We will be making two recipes each session that serves four people.
“We’ll be talking about things like how to shop on a budget. You can make soup from your odds and ends. I always call mine ‘the bottom of the fridge soup’.
‘500g of mince is 16 portions’
“So for example, we’ve got four recipes that you can do with a 500g of mince. So those four recipes serve four, so that’s 16 potions.
“My bugbear is chicken because people have the breast of the chicken and don’t do anything else with the chicken. I talk about how with a normal chicken, you can feed four people three times with it, soup or a Thai chicken broth or whatever.
“So really really interesting stuff. It’s not so much about the food, it’s about the confidence in the kitchen.
‘Olio and Too Good to Go’
“We also talk about apps like Olio and Too Good To Go.
“It’s zero cost. I’ve got a grant to enable me to do this. So the grant for this is from Torfaen Food4Growth.
“They also get a bag of free herbs and spices because a lot of the time people are frightened of herbs and spices because they don’t know and also they don’t want to spend £1.80 on paprika if they don’t know they like paprikia.
“We get it from Zero Waste Torfaen so we go over to Lauren and she is brilliant, we love her because sometimes I have 80 of these packs.
“She doesn’t mind putting a teaspoon in and that’s what so brilliant. Just nip in and get that. We need to change people’s perception of budget. Budget doesn’t mean you’re poor. It means you’re being careful. I shop on a budget. I hate food waste.
“If you make a lasagne you can make it for probably about £4 and that would feed six. Every single recipe we do, we have a cost per recipe and per person and we aim to have per person, under a pound a portion, and most of it is far less.
“We’ll do pizza and they’ll guess a pizza is £5 and it’s under a pound, yes 39p per person.”
Book on the course
They take place on Friday 4 April, Friday 11 April, Friday 9 May, and Friday 23 May.
