Charlie Davies set up Franklynn’s Barbershop in 2021. Cwmbran Life is putting the spotlight on independent businesses in and around the area.
Research by Keeping it Local said when you spend a £1 with a small/medium-sized business around 63p remains in the local economy. Only 40p stays local when you shop with larger businesses. The money you spend locally circulated through local businesses helps them to grow.
Every business owner has a story to tell.
She said her shop specialises in “modern and traditional men’s and children’s cuts”. She also specialises in “skincare from dermaplaning to charcoal masks” and works on an appointment-only basis.
Cwmbran Life asked her to tell us about her business
“My name is Charlie and I am the owner of a quirky studio barbershop in the small town of Cwmbran. My daughter’s name is Franklynn ,so there was no doubt about the name ‘Franklynn’s Barbershop’. I have been a barber since leaving school at the age of 16. I have always dreamt about having my own shop, but there was never a right time. During covid, everyone struggled in more ways than one, but mostly financially. I had nothing, so I thought what have I got to lose, let’s open a shop.
“Finding premises proved very difficult considering the rising cost in rent. I had almost given up when a client of mine said he knew of a private industrial unit that was empty. I went to view it with my eyes wide open.
“I had a vision and signed for the keys the same day. I ignored all the negative comments about where the shop was situated and how much work needed to be done. With the support of my amazing mother and talented tradesmen my dream came to reality and ‘Franklynn’s Barbershop’ was born. I wanted to be different from the rest and most importantly give my time and be inclusive of everyone.”
‘I wanted a space where people could feel comfortable’
“I work on an appointment-only basis, so it is always one-to-one, so there is never any waiting around for wriggly children or busy adults. Who wants to spend three hours waiting in a queue? I am also very passionate about mental health and wanted a space where people could feel comfortable.
“I am currently in the process of setting up a mental health walking group to bring people together, nobody needs to feel alone, it will be inclusive of everyone, bring the kids, the Mrs and the dog.
“I offer silent appointments for men or children who may suffer with anxiety or are noise sensitive. I offer my time to tailor to each client’s specific needs. I also have a lot of children with additional learning needs in the shop.
“I have an array of things to touch and play or even just watch TV, or if all else fails, chocolate and sweets. Again, my aim is for everyone to feel comfortable and included. Coming to the barbershop isn’t just about a haircut, it’s a chance to relax and unwind and have a chat away from the outside world.”
Charlie also brings Junior, her dog to the shop. She said: “All the customers do love him, even though he’s a space invader.”
‘A non-judgmental ear’
“I have a closed-door policy and always offer my clients a non-judgemental ear to listen and make sure the shop is always a safe place. I wanted to further enhance the clients’ experience and improve mental well-being by offering male facial treatments, because who doesn’t want to look and feel that bit extra ?
“I offer an array of different treatments from dermaplaning to the full works ‘Glass Facial’. I also offer brow and nose waxing. All the men were sceptical at first, but now they can’t get enough, or is it an excuse for time away from the house? Haha.
“I became self-employed not only because it was my dream, but so I could give my daughter the best of me and the time she so very deserves. My barbershop has been open for a whole year. I can’t believe it’s gone in such a flash.
‘Just do it!’
“The best thing is my clients have become my friends, and their children my daughter’s friends. It’s lovely to see some old faces from previous years in the industry and shiny new ones. Without my clients, my little business couldn’t thrive and go from strength to strength. If I could give anyone any advice on becoming self-employed, simply just do it!
“Have a positive mindset and you can achieve anything, be confident in yourself. Forget your fear, get unstuck and transform your life. Don’t overthink or self-doubt. Stop dithering and realise your potential.”
