Celebrating Pontypool’s market town history with ‘Artisan at The Boar Field’

Local residents and tourists are invited to visit Pontypool and celebrate the historical market town with a free event on Saturday 12 February.

New monthly market in Pontypool- first Saturday of every month

The event will also be the first of a new monthly artisan market that will take place on the first Saturday of each month in the town.

‘Artisan at The Boar Field’ is set to encourage locals and tourists back into the town centre and celebrate everything Pontypool has to offer. The market will feature a variety of local traders and stalls offering food, drink, baked goods and handmade gifts. Green Top Events, who bring food and craft markets to towns across South Wales, are running the market.

The Blue Boar Field was established in 1846 as the central weekly market for the local businesses in Pontypool. The site was quickly outgrown, leading to the building of the indoor market that is still in use today and will be the site for ‘Artisan at The Boar Field’.

The project aims to attract local residents and visitors back into the centre of the historic town, and continues the success of a Christmas themed event in December 2021.

‘Enjoy everything Pontypool has to offer’

Nikola Masters, chair of Friends of Pontypool Town, said: “After the success of the Christmas event we are so excited to welcome people back into the centre of town to enjoy everything Pontypool has to offer, making the Saturday market event a more regular occurrence in the near future.

“Last year, together with Torfaen County Borough Council, we secured funding through the Welsh Government Transforming Town Business Fund. This event is the first of 2022 and continues the project that began with the Christmas event to bring excitement and business back into the town.

“The funding is set to rejuvenate a market town full of history that played an important role in the day to day lives of our local communities, provide greater opportunities for local businesses and create sustainable areas for people to live and work.”

The free event runs from 10am until 3pm on Saturday 12 February in Pontypool town centre and market.
