Community councillor says the country needs a ‘revolution’ to ‘stop normalising poverty’

A Croesyceiliog and Llanyrafon Community councillor said he is “tamping” about how the country has “normalised poverty.”

Cllr Mark Price, Croesyceiliog South Ward, made the comments after a fellow councillor shared an update about a new ‘warm space’ being set up in the town. Warm spaces are venues that encourage people to come in while they are open and heated, to avoid residents using energy at home.

Cllr Nigel Davies, Croesyceiliog North Ward, told this evening’s meeting that he visited Cwmbran Centre for Young People and they were going to be a warm space. He said it was “open to all. No matter how old you are.”

Cllr Price, Welsh Labour, said the increase in “warm spaces” and giving out “blankets” was “normalising poverty”.

“It’s ‘we can’t turn our heating on as we can’t afford to’. It’s an absolute abhorrent state. It’s not having an evening where people can shelter.

“I’m absolutely tamping. I’m watching the telly, these absolute idiots in charge. And we’ve just elected another one”.

He clarified his point by saying that he meant that the UK’s soon-to-be new prime minister, Rishi Sunak was not chosen today by the electorate, but was an “elected politician”.

“We need to do something about it. The Labour Party needs to sort itself out. Rant over.

“All these little organisations are trying to help and all they’re doing is making it worse by normalising this type of behaviour. We need a revolution.

“You turn on the telly and you’re told how to cook without using an oven. I want to use my oven. It’s not normal behaviour.”
