Community councillors in Henllys have had reports from residents about a number of recent “serious” car incidents in the lane to Newport.
The council held its monthly meeting on Monday 13 March.
Cllr Lawrence Smith-Higgins told councillors that he had been told about “another serious accident. Fortunately, no-one has been seriously hurt, that we know of. More and more residents are raising issues. We are discussing it with highways. Residents in the lanes have made representations.”
Cllr Colette Thomas said that the speed limit in the lane was once 60mph but it had been reduced to 40mph. She suggested the police inspector for Cwmbran was informed and asked to “monitor” the lane.
Cllr Jonathan Lewis said police would have problems in the lane as there were not many locations to “park up”.
Cllrs Smith-Higgin said: “You can’t blame the weather, you have to assume it’s speed. Can highways tell us what can be done?” He added that the lane was being used by more traffic “and not just cars, bigger vehicles”.
Cllr Brenda Everett said she knew someone who has had their wing mirror knocked off on two occasions by passing cars as they drove on the lane.
Adrian Isaac, clerk, said that the county council was carrying out a traffic survey to check the speed and volume of cars using the lanes. He said he would ask for a copy of the findings.
Speed indicator signs
Last year the community council agreed to pay for three speed indicator signs to be fitted along Henllys Way. They have been fitted but there is an issue with the accuracy of the speed that appears on them as cars pass. Torfaen Council’s highways team has been asked to investigate and fix the problem.
The signs are:
- ‘Up the hilll’ near Llys Gwyrdd
- Near the entrance to Pensarn Way just as you come out of the Bettws lane
- On the stretch near Henllys Church in Wales School
