Councillors at Cwmbran Community Council will formally update a policy to allow free use of its annexe building to groups or organisations that meet certain criteria.

The council’s office on Ventor Road in Old Cwmbran has an extra building at its rear that can be hired. The policy and finance committee met last night and one of the items on the agenda was to update the policy on the use of the annexe for groups that support community wellbeing.

Gareth Davies, clerk to the council, said it was important to put the criteria in the application form so “if it comes to audit we can answer questions” over how and why some groups do not need to pay.

He told councillors that if hirers could show “clear links to wellbeing in the community” the room could be free.

Cllr Anthony Bird, Northville Ward, said that he thought they had previously agreed that groups they funded or were part of didn’t have to pay for use during office hours.

Councillor Rhiannon Bennett, Coed Eva Ward, said: “It would show how we’re supporting our community.”

Cllr Stuart Ashley, Mount Pleasant Ward, said there would be “a lot of positives” and the policy change “makes sense”.
