A Cwmbran man will be running a 70-mile ultra marathon this summer to raise funds for the Velindre Cancer Centre in Cardiff.

Paul Mason, 54, has already completed three 50k ultra marathons as part of his training for the race in June called The Wall, which stretches from Carlisle to Gateshead and follows the route of Hadrian’s Wall.

Paul said: “Two years ago, my father was diagnosed with mesothelioma, a type of lung cancer.  There is no cure for it, but he has had treatment from the brilliant staff at Velindre to slow things down.

“My father is a huge inspiration for me.  He’s so positive and keeps on fighting.

“My aim is to raise money for Velindre because of the great work they do.  I’ve been overwhelmed by all the support I’ve had, including donations from my family, friends, GMB union and colleagues at Bron Afon where I work.

The cut-off time for the race is 26 hours. Paul is hoping to finish it between 12 to 15 hours.

“This ultra is also about challenging myself – I don’t want to look back when I’m older and think, ‘I wish I’d done that.’

“I’ve surprised myself with my training – it just shows you anything is possible. It’s tough at times in the rain and wind but hopefully, it will make me stronger come race day.”
