Pupils at Croesyceiliog School are preparing to compete in their annual sports day today (Friday 7 July 2023).
A tweet this week from the school’s PE department has revealed some of the stunning records in track and field events set by pupils over the years. It said: “As we get ready for Sports Day on Friday it’s time to look back and admire the records that have been set over the years. Crazy how some have stood since 1962. Will 2023 be the year for record breakers?”
The list shows the times and distances for boys and girls in years seven, eight, nine and ten in:
- 100m
- 200m
- 300m
- 800m
- Relay
- Shot
- Discus
- Javelin
- Long jump
- High jump
In 2008 Natasha Cockram set the record for the year ten girls’ 800m event with a time of two minutes 28.44 seconds. Last December she ran the Valencia Marathon in two hours 26 minutes 14 seconds, setting a Welsh record and qualifying for the 2023 World Championships.
Since 1962 there are two records that still stand 51 years later:
- Brian Rowlands- Year eight boys discus champion: 33.29m.
- Raymond Hughes- Year ten boys Javelin champion: 46.17m
And since 1963 Linda Critchley has held the year ten girls shot putt title with 10.67m.
