A primary school in Cwmbran is celebrating after winning five awards for its strong links with families and the local community.

The Foundation of Community Engagement is a charity that supports schools in building effective partnerships with parents and carers and the wider community.

Llantarnam Community Primary School applied for their first award in February, and the organisation was so impressed with their application, they awarded bronze, silver, gold and the highest accolade, the heart of the community.

The school was praised for its afterschool hub for families, weekly playgroup and its ‘Kindness in the Community’ project, which distributes food boxes for around 40 families every fortnight.

Emily Boshein, the school’s family liaison officer, received a champion of the community award for her work in developing the ‘kindness project’ as well as the day-to-day support she provides to families.

The school’s governing body was commended for helping to organise extra-curricular activities and awards for pupils.

Sue Davis, director at the Foundation of Community Engagement charity, presented certificates and plaques to the school earlier this week.

Laura Perrett, headteacher at Llantarnam Primary School, said: “We are honoured to receive Heart of the Community accreditation and I am immensely proud to lead team Llantarnam who work extremely hard and continuously strive to improve and develop our excellent family and community ties.”

Sue said: “At the foundation we were excited to hear of the incredible community engagement work that takes place daily at Llantarnam Community Primary School – which is evident and visible across the school.

“Not only are we proud to issue Llantarnam Community Primary School with all five awards, but we’re also proud to make them Ambassadors for the Foundation, diolch yn fawr”
