Eighty-eight candidates contest 40 seats in Torfaen local government elections

The list of candidates contesting seats in the Torfaen local government elections on Thursday 5 May 2022 has been published.

A total of 88 people were nominated before the deadline of 5pm yesterday (Tuesday 5 April 2022).

I’ve been through the nomination papers and counted:

  • 40 Welsh Labour candidates
  • 21 Independent candidates
  • 21 Welsh Conservative Party candidates
  • 3 Welsh Liberal Democrats candidates
  • 1 Freedom Alliance. Stop the Great Reset candidate
  • 1- Green Party candidate
  • 1- Plaid Cymru – The Party for Wales candidate

Head-to-head elections

There are three wards where two candidates are contesting a single seat.

  • Greenmeadow: Jason O’Connell (Independent) and Mandy Owen (Welsh Labour)
  • Llanfrechfa and Ponthir: Huw Bevan (Welsh Conservative Party Candidate) and Karl Gauden (Welsh Labour)
  • Llanyrafon: Cory David Micheal Scriven (Welsh Conservative Party Candidate) and David Hartwell Williams (Welsh Labour)

Register to vote

You have until 11.59pm on 14 April to register to vote for the elections on Thursday 5 May 2022 The voting age for these elections is 16.

Boundary changes in Torfaen

The number of councillors in Torfaen has been reduced from 44 to 40. The full list of changes following the Local Government Boundary Review are:

  • reduce the number of councillors from 44 to 40
  • reduce the number of wards from 24 to 18
  • reduce the number of councillors in the Greenmeadow ward from 2 to 1
  • reduce the number of councillors in the Upper Cwmbran ward from 3 to 2
  • combine the wards of Croesyceiliog North and Croesyceiliog South and reduce the number of councillors from 3 to 2
  • combine the wards of Brynwern, Wainfelin, Pontypool and Cwmynyscoy and reduce the number of councillors from 4 to 3
  • combine the wards of Trevethin & Penygarn are reduce the number of councillors from 3 to 2
  • combine the wards of Pontnewynydd and Snatchwood to create the ward Pontnewynydd & Snatchwood with no reduction in the number of councillors
  • increase the number of councillors in the Llantarnam ward from 2 to 3
