Estyn inspectors have commended the high standards at Blenheim Road Community and Coed Eva primary schools in Cwmbran.

The schools, which merged in 2016, share an executive headteacher and a governing body.

In a report published this week, inspectors highlighted the positive impact of the unified leadership on both schools, particularly for pupils with additional learning needs. The curriculum was described as “broad, balanced, and purposeful,” with pupils benefiting from strong ties to the local community for social development.

Inspectors also praised the strong relationships between staff and pupils, noting that the “outstanding provision for pupil and family well-being” was a key feature. The inspections took place in November 2024.

The report recommended both schools focus on improving pupils’ writing and numeracy skills. Additionally, Blenheim Road Community Primary School was advised to address inconsistencies in teaching and assessment to boost pupils’ engagement in their learning. Coed Eva Primary School was encouraged to enhance the quality and consistency of feedback to pupils.

Paul Keane, executive headteacher, said: “We’re delighted that these inspection results provide a springboard for our two schools in our mission to keep changing our community and country for the better.

“Our children, our families, our staff and this unique patch of Wales here in Cwmbran deserve the very best. It is our privilege to serve them, and to reflect the immense pride we all feel in this community and in our learning.”

Cllr Richard Clark, executive cember for children, families and education, said: “I’d like to congratulate the federated executive leadership team and both Head of Schools for their collaborative approach, which is helping pupils and families to thrive.”
