More than 50 adult learners collected their GCSE results this week.
Fifty-three learners with Torfaen Council’s Adult Community Learning took GCSE exams this year. A spokesperson for the council said that 100% achieved grades A to C in English and 68% achieved A to C in maths.
All GCSE maths learners were funded through the UK Government’s new Multiply programme, which meant they could study for free.
Megan Evans, from New Inn, got an A in English and B in maths. She said: “It’s my eighth time trying and I’ve finally got the grades I want. I’m finally going onto study my PGCE at the University of South Wales and become a primary school teacher. I would say to other learners – when you think you have revised, revise some more.”
Louise Jelley, from Sebastopol, said: “I joined GCSE maths to boost my own confidence. I think it’s a qualification everyone wants to get deep down. After lots of hard work, I achieved a B and I am absolutely over the moon.”
Lee Stewart, from Llanyravon, said: “I achieved a B, I can’t believe it. If you’re thinking about doing it, grab it with both hands, the skills I’ve learned have helped me so much.”
Councillor Joanne Gauden, executive member for economy, skills and regeneration, said: “This year’s results are testament to the hard work and dedication of our adult learners and our tutors in the Adult Community Learning Service. Offering residents the chance to improve their skills and qualifications is one of the priorities in our County Plan.
“We’re so proud of our learners celebrating their amazing achievements today. Not only is it proof of their commitment to succeed, but it also reflects the high-quality teaching and learning that takes place in within the ACL service.”
