Does your child want to learn how to play chess?
Cwmbran Chess Club is launching free beginner classes to help young players get to grips with the game.
Thanks to a grant from Cwmbran Community Council, the club can now hire Llanyrafon Methodist Church for an extra hour before its regular sessions. This new time slot will be dedicated to teaching children the rules and basics of chess.
Sessions take place from 6pm to 7pm on the first and third Tuesday of each month, starting Tuesday 4 November and running until March. The club’s regular meetings follow from 7pm to 9pm at the same venue.
Children who are new to chess are encouraged to attend the beginner sessions.
Those who already know how the pieces move are welcome to join the main club from 7pm.
Local care homes
The grant will also support outreach activities, including potential visits to local care homes to help older residents learn or get back into the game.
Cwmbran Chess Club competes in the Gwent Leagues, and its members compete across the country.
