A Pontypool woman who has had treatment for breast cancer thanked the runners who took part in a Boxing Day fun run for charity in Cwmbran.
Around 150 runners, many in fancy dress, set off from the start line at the Olive Tree in Croesyceliliog at 11am for a 2.5 mile or 5 mile run.
Lena Evans is a member of Griffithstown Harriers, who organised the event. Each year, the club raises money for a charity that has a special meaning for one of its members.
Lena was busy organising the raffle in the packed club after the event when I spoke to her.
Next to a table covered in dozens of prizes she said: “I was diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer in March 2018 and had chemotherapy, radiotherapy, mastectomy, and reconstruction surgery between 2018 to 2022.
“Breast Cancer Now were a charity that supported me with literature that helped me get through and my family get through the treatment. It’s just always been there, so ever since I’ve tried to raise funds for them because they do such important work with, not just research, but also with supporting ladies and their families,
“People are so generous and so amazing. I think too many of us are touched by cancer in one way or another. I’m just really grateful for everybody that has turned out today, Griffithshstown Harriers Running Club for for choosing my charity for the year, and for family and friends that have supported me over the last six years. Long may I continue to be disease-free.”
