The annual memorial service for Cwmbran’s John Fielding VC, honoured for his bravery during the Battle of Rorke’s Drift in 1879, was held this morning.

The service took place at his graveside at St Michael’s & All Angels Church in Llantarnam.

It was organised by the Cwmbran and District Ex‑Services Association (CADESA) in partnership with the trustees of the John Fielding Memorial Service.

This year is the 147th anniversary of the Battle of Rorke’s Drift, where his bravery led to him being awarded the Victoria Cross– the highest military decoration in the UK, and awarded for bravery or an act of self-sacrifice.

The service was led by Reverend Frieda Evans, assisted by Rev Elizabeth Kerl and Reverend Canon Brian Pippen.

Music was by Piping Hot Cwmbran, a local traditional bagpipes and drums band, and the Salvation Army Band.
