A mesothelioma and lung cancer support group meets every month in Cwmbran.

Jade Reeves (left) and Tracey Davies work for Aneurin Bevan University Health Board and I chatted to them today to find out more about the group and how it works.

Tracey said: “They talk about anything they like. They don’t have to talk about their cancers. It’s entirely up to them so we’re led by them.

“They can bring their relatives, they can bring anybody they like just for support.

“Some patients feel better outside a medical setting. It’s more relaxed than a medical setting. They can speak openly. They can speak to us about anything. If we don’t the answer we can go back and tell them at the next session, or ring them and tell them ‘this is what we found out’.”

Jade said: “They connect with each other. The people that have been coming for a while are good friends and see each other outside the support groups sometimes.

“Sometimes it can feel very isolating so to have that additional peer support, I think that really helps people.

“People feel more relaxed.”

When and where do they meet?

The group meets on the first Wednesday of every month from 11am to 1pm in the Congress Theatre.

There is no need to book, just turn up for and enjoy chat, coffee and biscuits.
