Miles Cook is standing as a Welsh Liberal Democrats candidate and here he writes why he thinks you should vote for him in the Llantarnam Ward election taking place this Thursday.

“I think I’d be an excellent councillor for Llantarnam for several reasons. Firstly in business, I’ve a lot of experience in working for the people in the teams I manage (such as GoCompare). There are always issues to resolve, people’s concerns that need understanding and addressing, and conflicts to resolve with the outside. I’ve always worked hard for my reports, fighting their corner where I know we can win, and finding compromises where I know we can’t. I have a track record of getting things done, so hopefully I can bring those skills to serve Llantarnam.

“Secondly, the Liberal Democrats have put me forward as a candidate to give people a choice, other than the status quo (Conservative) or Conservative lite (Labour). The country is in a huge mess, and I think sadly Labour wants to play everything safe for their expected coronation next year. At the top, their leadership – whilst they’d be an improvement over the current government – appear totally rudderless. They seem just happy to pick up disaffected voters, rather than having a bold vision how to fix the UK.

“I think we need a shakeup, and the Liberal Democrats are the best placed to do that. We have set out a roadmap for re-integrating into the EU single market, to reverse the now patently obvious disastrous policy that the Tories have taken us down for their own interests. Partly as a result, the country’s worsened financial state has hit all of us in the current cost of living crisis. For all the damage it has done to the public purse, frustratingly, Labour haven’t the backbone to even acknowledge this. “That ship has sailed” apparently… So enough. We need drastic change, rather than the flip flopping between the now ineffectual 2 parties.

“A little about me. I work in Llantarnam as an IT consultant, with a lot of experience in the tech sector, including startups where things have to move pretty quickly. I’m a former Army reservist with the Royal Welsh and Army Air Corps, a STEM ambassador (previously volunteering at several local primary schools), motorsport competitor and a family man with 3 boys (who keep us busy!). I’ve lived and worked in Cwmbran since 2012, and it was the best move we’ve ever made.”
