New and expectant dads can join a programme in Torfaen to give them the support and skills needed to be a parent.

For Dads, By Dads is an 11-week course to help expectant dads and dads with children up to the age of 18 months. Members will take part in weekly workshops on subjects including:

  • Health and wellbeing
  • Diet and nutrition
  • Midwife and health visitor information
  • Psychology
  • Gambling and gaming

Torfaen Sports Development team set up the programme following research by a number of organisations, including Fathers Outreach, Tidy Butt, Gwent Psychology, Recoveries 4 All and Newport County in the Community. A spokesperson from the team said: “They found men benefited from having a safe space where they can ask questions and learn about themselves and their children as they start their journey of being a dad. The support group will help them prepare for the change in their life that a child will bring.”

Jacob Guy, Torfaen sports development officer, said: “We know that there is quite a lot of support out there for parents or mothers, but not a lot aimed solely at dads. With male suicide rates at a high, it’s important that dads are able to come to a group where they can ask questions and learn.“

For Dads, By Dads starts on Thursday 20 January 2022 at Pontypool Active Living Centre and runs from 7pm until 9pm.
