The national convenience store chain One Stop is still ‘keen’ to open in Pontnewydd despite failing to get planning rules overturned by Torfaen Council.

The Tesco-owned chain wants to open in the former Pontnewydd Inn on Commercial Street. The site has been given planning permission to open as a shop and sell alcohol. But there are conditions linked with the application over the size of delivery vehicles that can visit the shop, the times they can deliver and where they can park.

In October One Stop applied for those conditions to be removed. But a couple of weeks ago Torfaen planners rejected their application. The decision was welcomed by the three councillors for Pontnewydd, David Daniels, Sue Morgan and Stuart Ashley.

They said: “We’ve pushed hard to make sure Torfaen officers understand that deliveries via Commercial Street would be too risky. We’re pleased that this application has been turned down. We would like to see the building used, but it’s important that it does not add to the many problems we already face in the heart of the village.

“We are determined to address the valid concerns people tell us about traffic, parking and safety in Pontnewydd. We want our village to be a thriving, safe and attractive place for everyone.”

This week Cwmbran Life contacted One Stop to ask for their reaction to the planning application decision.

A One Stop spokesperson said: “We are disappointed in the decision and are currently reviewing our options. We remain keen to bring this site to life as it has been empty for many years. We hope to find a delivery solution so we can bring our community-based convenience offer to the local population.”
