One Stop has told Cwmbran Life it is working on an “alternative delivery solution” for a controversial site of a potential new shop in the town.

The Tesco-owned chain of convenience stores wants to open in the former Pontnewydd Inn on Commercial Street “as soon as possible”.

In January the business failed to get planning rules over the size of delivery vehicles that can visit the site and where and when they can unload overturned.  The decision was welcomed by local councillors who felt it would add to traffic problems in the village. Last November, Cwmbran Life reported worries by local residents and business owners who felt a One Stop would affect the family-run businesses in the area.

But it has continued to submit various planning applications. 

In February permission was given to install new entrance doors and last week the council approved planning permission for new signs at the building including ones for ‘customer parking’ and ‘main store entrance’.

A One Stop spokesperson said: “As part of our UK-wide expansion, One Stop remain keen to bring our offer to the community of Pontnewydd. We are currently working on an alternative delivery solution in line with planning requirements of the local council. At this time, we are unable to confirm an opening date, but we will open as soon as possible.”
