Cwmbran Community Council held the monthly back-to-back meetings of its grants and events committees tonight.
The Events & Community Projects meeting was chaired by Cllr Michele Day, Ty Canol Ward. They received an update on two recent events, the community awards evening and the primary school eco quiz.
A community celebration dinner is being held on Friday 3 March at Greenmeadow Golf Club. The Primary Schools Choral Festival is from Monday 20 March to Thursday 24 March in the Congress Theatre. And the Cwmbran Big Event is on Saturday 10 June at the Boating Lake.
Cllr Julian Davenne, Fairwater and Oaksford Ward, reminded councillors that this Monday (27 February) is the annual volunteer play service awards at the Congress Theatre where they would be “celebrating all their hard work throughout the year.”
Councillors agreed that any underspend from 2022/23 budget would be moved to reserves at the end of the financial year.
Grants to Voluntary Organisations
The Grants to Voluntary Organisations meeting was chaired by Cllr Phil Seabourne, Ty Canol Ward.
Cllr Sue Morgan, Lowlands & Avondale Ward, declared an interest as a member of the New Harmony Singers who had applied for a grant.
The previous meeting’s minutes showed that they gave grants to:
- Greenmeadow Football Club: £1,000 towards new training equipment, football kit, the club’s affiliation and first aid and coaches’ courses.
- Cwmbran AllsortsWomen’s Institute: £250 to help cover cost of public speakers’ fees.
- Cwmbran RFC: £1,550 towards an electric commercial fryer- £599, Range Cooker- £799, and a kitchen sink and tap pack- £150.
Councillors agreed that any underspend from 2022/23 budget would be moved to reserves at the end of the financial year. Cllr Morgan said she was happy to vote for any underspend in grants to be moved but suggested the council should promote its grant scheme to encourage more applications.
Cllr Ashley said this would be something the new clerk would pick up when he starts next week.
The committee reviewed a grant application for £250 from the New Harmony Singers, a choir that meet in St Mary’s Church in Croesyceiliog. Cllr Bill Walker, Llantarnam Ward, said the choir was only using the church as a community hall to practice and he supported the application even though it was outside the Cwmbran Community Council area.
Cllr Bird agreed and pointed out that 13 of the choir’s 31 members lived in the Cwmbran Community Council area. He said: “They’ve performed at two of our Christmas events.”
The choir had applied for £250 to go towards the cost of £252.35 for the music copies for two songs and insurance. The councillors agreed a suggestion by Cllr Bird to give a grant of £252.35. Cllr Bird joked that it would give their auditors something to look at. Their recommendation will now go to the Full Council meeting on 29 March to be ratified.
