Cwmbran Drive- the stretch between Cwmbran Stadium and Sainsbury’s

Work to upgrade a section of Cwmbran Drive as part of the council’s Better Roads improvement programme has started.

Surface dressing will now take place on both carriageways between Sainsbury’s and Llantarnam Park up until Saturday 11 July.

Rolling lane closures will be in place while crews are working, and the road will reopen as soon as each section is finished. A 10mph speed limit will remain until the new surface has fully sealed. Drivers are advised to use alternative routes to avoid delays.

The update follows surface improvements on 23 roads in April and May, delivered through the council’s five‑year Better Roads investment programme.

A council spokesperson said that Surface dressing is a fast, cost‑effective maintenance technique that helps extend road life by ten to 15 years, improves skid resistance and protects against water damage.

A further phase of resurfacing and large‑scale repairs is due to begin in the summer, focusing on roads in poorer condition. Routes were chosen through officer inspections and data‑led surveys.

The £6.4m Better Roads programme launched in August 2025. Last year, 38 roads were resurfaced, funded by £4m of council capital investment and £2.44m from the Welsh Government.
