Pupils from a primary school in Cwmbran have swapped the classroom for the boardroom during an educational visit to a biscuit factory.

Thirty year five and six pupils from Llantarnam Primary School were given a tour of the Burton’s Biscuit factory, where they saw how biscuits are made, packaged and distributed.

The children were then tasked with coming up with ideas to improve the biscuit-making process and develop new marketing strategies in a specially arranged boardroom session.

The visit also included a taste test of Wagon Wheels, cookies and chocolate fingers made at the factory. Each pupil took home a goody bag and a T-shirt.

Burton’s Biscuit was founded in 1935 and has six manufacturing sites across the UK. Its Cwmbran factory produces about 45,000 tonnes of biscuits each year.

The trip, organised by Cllr David Thomas, aimed to give the children work-related experience and enhance their learning in science and technology, in line with the national curriculum.

Headteacher Laura Perrett, said: “We are committed to providing our pupils with unique learning opportunities that extend beyond the classroom.

“This visit to Burtons Biscuits allowed our students to apply their creativity and problem-solving skills in a real-world setting, making learning both fun and impactful.”

Cllr Richard Clark, executive member for children, families and education, said: “Excursions like this are vital in offering children a broader education. They not only make school more enjoyable and engaging but also have a positive impact on school attendance.
