Cwmbran Celtic FC say their new solar‑panel system is already making a huge difference to the club’s running costs – even managing to power the floodlights for more than half a game.
The installation was funded through grants from Sport Wales and Torfaen County Borough Council.
Malcolm Jarrett, Cwmbran Celtic’s grants & projects officer, said the panels have performed impressively despite the recent poor weather.
“Even in the weather we’ve been experiencing, the solar panels were producing enough electricity to keep the battery linked to the system pretty much topped up,” he said.

“This means that our day‑to‑day usage is now costing us nothing. It was even capable of powering our floodlights for more than half a game, so the overall savings are substantial.”
The club is now in discussions with its energy supplier about selling excess electricity back to the National Grid – something Malcolm says could provide a welcome boost during the summer months when no matches are played.
Malcolm also thanked JS Electrics for installing the system efficiently and working around the club’s busy fixtures and training sessions while on site.
