Three members of Cwmbran Park Bowls Club have reached a golden milestone. The trio have been playing for the club for 50 years.
Earlier this week they met at their home green in Old Cwmbran and were each given an engraved glass decanter to mark their achievements. Howard Rees, club secretary, shared a brief biography of their careers. He said: “All three players are dedicated members of Cwmbran and we are extremely proud of them for achieving 50 years of bowling with one club.”
John Alford- John started at the club in 1967, and has played regularly throughout his career for club, valley and county, as well as serving on the committee of Cwmbran. He was the winner of the Monmouthshire Bowling Association (MBA) Singles Competition in 1979.
Brian Relland- Brian was introduced to the game of bowls by his brother-in-law John Alford in 1969 and like John he has bowled for club, valley and county on a regular basis. He has won an impressive number of competitions beginning with the MBA under 35’s Singles in 1977. He won the MBA Champion of Champions in 1979, and was MBA Singles Champion in 1983, and MBA Champion of Champions in 1987. In 1993 and 1998 he was a member of the team that won the MBA Triples Competition, and in 1988 and 2003 he was a member of the team that won the MBA Rinks Competition. Brian was a Welsh triallist and has been for a number of years been a MBA selector.
Alan Cooper– Alan joined Cwmbran in 1970 and like John and Brian has been a regular bowler for club, valley and county. Alan was a member of the team which won the MBA Triples Competition in 1986. In 2018 along with B. Berry he won the MBA over 60’s Pairs Competition. Alan was also a Welsh triallist and for a number of years has been a MBA Selector.
