This photo shows a Torfaen man cleaning mud off his legs minutes after he jumped into the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal to save a dog from drowning.

Rhys Hallett was enjoying a walk along the towpath at Goytre Wharf with a friend last Sunday when he leapt into action.

The 29-year-old, who is from Cwmbran but now lives in Pontypool, spotted a distraught “old lady” whose dog could not get out of the water.

Rhys said: “I had to go in there and get him. I was not going to let an old lady get in. She was in tears.

“The dog must have seen something and thought, ‘I’m going to fly through the water’. He wasn’t getting out of there.”

The Jack Russell Terrier was “panicking” when Rhys got into the “muddy water.”

Rhy said: “The more it cried, the more it sank”.

Once Rhys handed the dog back to its owner, he found somewhere to sit down to clear himself up.
